Hay all, I'm keen this summer to try and keep those design skills sharp. So we're thinking about trying to tackle a mega group project. Open to all and make a sweet piece for portfolio. and also learn CAD for those who haven't tackled solidworks yet, or improve if you know a bit already.

Its been suggested that we try and make a robot (or another complex thing with different sections) and each person if responsible for just one part. I.e. an arm/leg/head/torso/weapon. You would keep in contact with the people doing the parts which attach to yours to co-ordinate the joins etc. And the resulting aesthetic and materials would be real interesting.

The more people the better and more complex we could make it. It would also be cool to try and get an animation student on board to get some help animating at the end.

I know people are still busy but we could maybe work on it through the whole summer when people are round. We can all meet up for some cad sessions too if people need a hand up to be brought up to speed on SW (solidworks).

Who's keen???????? Its going to be mean!!!!

Art, my life.

One of my friend once considered his works as making life art and art life. I like this theme very much. Just like making art commercialization or vice versa, which is also a trend. People may think it devalues art if it is seen as business, actually that’s not true. Art will increase its value through business quality while business sublime art in a better way. Art is not isolated but belongs to publics.

In the financial crisis, profit decreases. Once wining profit mode doesn’t work well right away. Companies need to self-exam, maybe change of business mode can help them.

Business mode is kind of a trade structure among benefit members related, that’s way of winning profit. Chinese enterprises should go further. Current companies cannot win by use of a product or technology, neither of one or two ideas, but systemic arrangements and complete strength do work, that ‘s design of business mode.

One example from :
Mcdonald’s CEO Clauk lectured in business college of Harvard and he asked， “what do I do?” the students laughed and said, “ don’t you sell fast food?” Sure, real estate is not separate managed by Mcdonald, but along with fast food. Mcdonald adopts franchising to rent a store for 20 years with the rent would be the same within the 20 years, then it attracts franchise stores and leases it to them with charge of 20% rent. It’ll increase the rent depending on the value of the land, therefore, clauk thought he made money from the land but not from fast food. It seems Mcdonald makes money from fast food, in fact from real estate. He manages fast food not only for direct profit, but for rent. The indeed profit winning is from the rent of increment of the land.

Huge profit from real estate plays a very important part in the expending of Mcdonald, where business mode works.
Another example, it is well known to us that Nokia and Motorola are cell phone magnate. Most of good-looking cell phones are made by Motorola, while recent years its target market decreases, why? The essential reason is Motorola is just cell phone maker but Nokia is service provider. Mobiledu, design by PEOPEO digital technology(Beijing) CO, Ltd, provides the service that users can learn English any time. This service design gets lots of praise when it comes into effect and won IDEA award. The difference between Motorola and Nokia lies in that Nokia provides extra service based on cell phone, which becomes a habit of the uses, therefore it presents a huge market potential. Uses use Mobiledu because of Nokia Phone, but there may be a time users will buy Nokia cell phone because of Mobiledu. Then service design is just like a bridge between the user and Nokia, who both will get profit.

There is a numberless pure manufacturers in China. The expensive and delicate products are mostly made in China, maybe it’s time for the manufacturers to reconsider their business mode to improve their position in the market.

Design industry is developing with the fast development of Chinese economy. Nowadays design becomes a hot word, while sense of design is very popular. People not only go in for perfect functions and but also for functional appearances. The weakness of Chinese industry design makes local enterprises win little profit. Most of the top company management notice that design will cost a large number of money, but they cannot see it will bring in good returns. Many would like to pay for large number of ads fee but never think to develop a new top quality product.

There appears some defects of the industries in the financial crisis, they should think about how to bottom out and overfly. The promotion of design poses a challenge for Chinese industry, while this is a time to pay more attention into industry design. In China, US and European designers are very popular, why not Chinese designers? Cannot they lack of creativity? None. Many Chinese designers have made a name for themselves. The difference lies in mode and management, which should be the current industry revolution of China. From Bauhaus to now, why US has being dominated industrial design all he time, the answer is they have reasonable and efficient management and mode. US industrial designers lead new product development and its trend. Before design, they will do research into production, craftwork, material and culture, which takes 90% of investment and time while only 10% for drawing. Only you fully know the users you can design what they need. Meantime, the recognition from the users will bring in benefit for the client, increase the brand and promotion as well. How to achieve win-win? It requires professional design management flow.

Black&deckor coffer maker designed by PEOPEO（www.peopeo.de）can be sold over thousands pieces; Aliebware computer case designed by PEOPEO dominated the top brand market and won lots of applause, which result in the success of the brand as well. This case is particularly designed for the computer games fans, its shining color and simple outline made the case so cool. All these successful items are dependent on PEOPEO’s advanced research methods, such as lab testing, user experience analysis, expression analysis, eye track, interview with the users and so on. Only the product after designer’s thinking can reflect the value of the designer, only the product meting consumers’ needs can be welcomed. Here more emphasis is attached to thinking and scientific research. One Australia printed the newspaper on the package of fast food, which resulted in media consumption revolution. He took granted that people would read news paper when eating fast food would become a life style. When we see it from the customer point of view, this will present some subtle market consumption relations. It’s better to find out customer life style rather than target customers. Deeply you see, early you succeed.

Design is not merely one separate industry nor profound. Successful design is kind of commercialization. They are individuals and uncontradictory, business is not purely profit while design is not so sublime art. Business related reflects economy feature of design art, which merges into the society through business, thus displays value of design.

The enterprises need to make profit in the designed business mode. There is market if consumer’s psychology is well known. It’s PEOPEO’s mission to benefit both the clients and users, just like what Tingbin Tang , professor of China Central Academy of Fine Arts, CEO of PEOPEO Digital technology CO, Ltd, good service and business mode design benefits every party involved. PEOPEO employs advanced user psychology research analysis along with top quality 3D animation and product promotion mode, it works as part of the clients to deliver good works. PEOPEO is the first to provide such complete design process and management mode. Will it be the one to enhance design industry and manufacture industry in China?

Software industry is to provide various service through technology.QQ software,MSN, Aliwangwang provide services of instant message, sending files and video with the users; Sogou and intelligent ABC provide shortcut words input services; Rising anti-virus, Jiangmin anti virus and Kingsoft anti virus provide services of preventing virus from computers; Stormwind, realplayer, TT player, Windows Media Player provide users with music and films playing tools. Different software provides different service in various ways, which bring fresh experience for the users and benefits for the companies as well. People enjoy services at any time, while the quality of service will have influence on our moods and lift level. The function of service design is to make people smile more instead of frowning. What does your software do?
A good service system is reflected in good software technology and user experience interface and effective communication between users and machine, which forms a perfect business mode and will produce new creativity and service design.
From agriculture economy to industrial economy, while nowadays it is service economy age. Most companies provide a kind of service, the content and mode of which needs creativity and design as well. Service is a series of activities, which makes up of a system and produces value for the end users. Service design is human- centered. Human is one of the most important part in service design, whose demands decides the direction of service design. It comes into being because of people’s needs.
Service design is a new field and extension of design. Actually it’s a systematic design, focused on the scene of using system. People uses products in a specific environment in the structural procedure. Service design is to design the whole system while the system is service.
service design covers marketing, psychology and aesthetics , which make up of a wholeness, which brings about a completely new and effective business mode.
From the view of marketing, service design makes investigation into the market, which is market research and usability research. We can know the demands of the market through a series of questionaire and users sample survey, thus make responding plans based on the marketing trends, which play decisive role in the designing and optimizing of the whole service system structure.
Psychologically, it makes analysis of the users’ minds and behaviors, including user interface study, project management and user experience analysis and lab testing, which is presented by worldly most advanced methods, such as lab analysis, eye tract analysis and expression analysis.Lab analysis is that we can see the users when they are using the products but they cannot see us, we’ll make analysis of their behavior habits and interests. Eye tracking is defined like this, that we can know where the users look at and which interests them. Expression analysis means we can see every expression when the users use the product, while the trivial expression can reflect whether the user is happy or not. Thus we may improve the product in a better way.
Aesthetically, UI is not merely for the good looking of the interface, it directly relates with psychology, users’ behavior way and cognition process, which needs strong technical support, therefore, UI design is also called interactive design. Interactive means interaction is involved. Excellent interactive works is easily understood, because easy operation decides whether the structure of the software is perfect or humanized. Usually the software is reasonable while the interface is perceptual helping users to operate the software, which relies on service design. PeoPeo digital technology(Beijing) CO.Ltd (http://www.peopeo.de) provides the service design for Nokia, Mobiledu, bears the Excellenc interactive experienced products of yearly IDEA excellent industry design awards awarded by US Industry Designer Association and Weekly Business. IDEA is well known as Oscar award in design field, which highly affirms the outstanding professional levels. More importantly, Nokia Mobiledu is the first award of interactive design in China. The registers of Mobiledu is over than 300 million and increasing all the time. The feedback from the users shows that they get what they want very easily and will keep on using it. Its success is not merely because of the visual artistic designed by Peopeo, but the particular scene, brainstorming, bodystorming, balanced systematic ecological diagram, video and photographing, experiencing the model. We use these methods to design a practical and creative service experience, let users or service interact and communicate with the interface, additionally, the communication between machine and users is more itelligent. The roles and relationships between each other of the balanced service system consist a service. It is one of the working steps to draw the ecological diagram. Peopeo does this job to find more possible chances and ideas to setup of a completely new service concept. The roles in this system will exchange value and get mutual benefit.the technology and functions of modern products and service become more and more complicated, the manuals get thicker and thicker for the users, which result in losing clients. It’s vital to make the service more efficient, more effective, more easily operated, more exciting for the users. Beautiful interface and scientific system will make users easy to understand.
What’s a completely new and effective business mode? That’s the service design recognized by both of the users and the clients. Mobiledu is such an example. Every part in the procedure exchange sources with each other and optimize their benefit in cooperation. As a free of charge software, the users are exciting to get what they want; developer Nokia, course provider and service provider Sina get their pie from the 2RMB charged course, while the telecommunication operator benefits as well because of the traffic. Good service design benefits all.
Good service makes customers joyful, while good service design is a invisible power bringing about visible effect and efficiency for the customers and users as well, which opens a new page for you.

I am in the process of creating a hard shell backpack for my Industrial design class and have a few questions concerning the design. If you have a spare minute please answer the following.
1.	What do you normally carry in your backpack?
2.	What is your primary use?
3.	What is your biggest concern when buying a backpack?
4.	Would you pick a backpack based on how it looks?
5.	Have you ever dropped your backpack and had something break.
6.	What don’t you like about the design of backpacks?
7.	What would you change about backpacks?
8.	How often do you carry a backpack?
9.	How much weight do you usually carry.
10.	How long do you carry a backpack
11.	Do you find your backpack uncomfortable?
12.	What would make it more comfortable?
Thankyou

Surface, Texture, Decoration

The idea of surface, texture and decoration to me represents the covering, or perhaps hiding of what lies beneath. This became the prompt in wanting to turn ordinary materials, particularly ones found in waste streams into objects of desire and by altering the material it provided a great way to add value.

MDF is a particularly favorite material of mine. It is made up of waste sawdust, the dregs of wood industries. Because of its abundance people consider it as an un-valuable wood to which they generally cover up. It is used in a majority of modern housing, in kitchen’s bathrooms and even furniture but it is hidden using veneers or Formica which either imitate or completely deny any reference to wood. MDF can easily be found in countless bins at building sites, it piles up unwanted and unloved. I wanted to show people what a great material it is.

By using the ideas behind surface, texture and decoration it provided a great way to explore this.

Laser cutting has been getting particular attention in the furniture design world as students and practitioners alike find an easy to use a process that delivers quick forms. This process is where a laser is used to cut most materials on a flat bed like much like a printer. Because it cuts in flat panels a particular aesthetic can be seen in furniture made with the laser cutter. Furniture that uses laser cutting is generally designed for this process and not the other way around. This great tool has become a constraint to contemporary furniture design it has a very technological aesthetic and I found it didn’t reference traditional furniture making at all.

I have always found a dry humor in imitated wood grains and the wood grain texture I actually used on the MDF came from the side of a Bunning’s warehouse. They had used a kind of GIB board to mimic wood grain on their building. So I photographed the grain and then subsequently laser cut the pattern on MDF.

Furniture craft to me is about acknowledging the old and finding new ways to explore this. By doing this you can end up making something truly unique. The brief called for consideration to join detailing. The intersections of wood created a good way to reference tradition and through research I found inspiration in Gothic and Victorian style furniture where intense detail such as joins is applied to form. By using the tradition of furniture joins it also allowed me to spend special attention to detail that simultaneously referenced the past and enhanced the material's value.

By exploring suface, texture and decoration through materials and processes it has given great inspiration to my design. It is through these processes that I have achieved a result. By acknowledging contemporary process such as laser cutting and juxtaposing it to older methods I was able to create this furniture. Even though the MDF I used was relatively inexpensive the way I treated it and the methods I used were time intensive and it was through this time that value can be truly found within the end result.
